The EU’s Maginot Line

On Radio France Internationale this morning, a finance official from the European Union compared the latest Greek bailout deal to a “Maginot Line” protecting the rest of the euro zone from contagion. Given the inflexibility and glacier-like reflexes of the EU, the allusion is unintentionally appropriate. But if you’re trying to instill confidence that you can nimbly contain unexpected developments that threaten your very existence, then la Ligne Maginot is probably not your best choice of comparison.
