The Corner

An Example of Electoral Positioning

Walt Minnick, a businessman who held a White House post during the Nixon Administration, won election to the U.S. House this year from Idaho. He ran against incumbent Rep. Bill Sali largely on fiscal issues, promising to help rejuvenate the American economy with tax cuts and budget restraint. Minnick also savaged the $700 billion bailout as “fiscal recklessness” and an unjustified transfer of wealth. “This bill is a giveaway to Wall Street,” he said. “It does not do enough to protect the American taxpayer, and it adds far too much debt to our record deficit.”

Minnick is a Democrat. Sali is a Republican.
