In Excelsis Gloria

There’s a commercial on the air in New York City promoting the Broadway musical version of “The Color Purple.” It’s basically a bunch of people talking about how inspiring they find it. Faces slide past praising it — and somewhere in the middle, for a second, there is Gloria Steinem offering her word of celebration. I understand that Gloria Steinem is an icon for feminists. But do they really look to her for advice on what shows to go to? Isn’t she far too busy fighting the patriarchy? This would be like trying to appeal to me by having Robert Bork suggesting I go see the new musical version of “The Wedding Singer.”
