‘Extraordinary and Magnificent’

On today’s Editors episode, Rich and Co. discuss the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the end of an era.

Our resident former Brit, Charlie, comments, “I think she was a remarkable woman, and I think she did the job she found herself in with admirable honor and duty and patience.” He also reminds us of a fascinating historical note: “She did not grow up expecting to be queen. . . . She was only made queen and at an early age because her uncle abdicated . . . and her father — who had not expected to be king either, and who took over — died young. . . . And suddenly Elizabeth is queen.”

Despite his strong Irish roots, MBD has a kind word for the deceased monarch: “She disappeared into this role, and by doing so, it elevated her even more. And that meant keeping up a grueling pace of touring, not just Great Britain but also the wider Commonwealth. . . . She’s an astounding figure and she’s a link to a very different past.”

Though respectful in his words, Phil makes his view clear: “It just still seems like an anachronism to have a sort of modern democratic country and have a head of state being a hereditary position.”

After paying their respects to the queen, the editors then discuss New York governor Hochul’s harsh words to MBD (and all New York conservatives). “I mean, Hochul literally said ‘Move to Florida where you belong.’ It is an insane thing to say for a lot of reasons.” What are these reasons? Listen below to find out, and to learn what our editors think of AOC’s presidential plans, Joe Manchin’s reelection chances, and what new piece of sports memorabilia Rich has picked up.
