A Family Affair

As you may have heard, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s family in Jordan ran newspaper ads denouncing their infamous relative.

You can see scanned copies – not previously available — here and here.

The ad that ran on Nov. 20 is addressed to King Abdullah and says:

“We pledge to uphold our allegiance to your throne and our beloved Jordan, and sacrifice what we hold dear for you. We clearly denounce all terrorist acts and operations claimed by the so-called Ahmad Fadil Nazzal al-Khalayilah, alias Abu-Mus’ab al-Zarqawi, and openly declare that we, the Al-Khalayilah tribesmen, disown him and renounce his actions, pronouncements, and whatever he approves of. Whoever dares to commit such acts in our exalted kingdom is not a Jordanian. He is not related to Jordan, has never drunk its water, or sought its shade, because a Jordanian does not aim his arrow at his own people. We disown him until judgment day.”

The ad that ran Nov. 29 read:

“We, the sons of the Bani Hasan tribe– including all its clans in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, represented by its senators, deputies, chieftains, mayors, and dignitaries and all those affiliated with this tribe– support our cousins in the Al-Khalayilah clan for announcing that they disowned the terrorist Ahmad Fadil Nazzal Al-Khalayilah, also known as Abu-Mus’ab Al-Zarqawi.

“We all announce our full support for this position and we denounce all the terrorist acts this person carries out or for which he claims responsibility. None of the members of this tribe has anything to do with these acts. We stress that all of us gather around the Hashemite banner, which will remain fluttering with God’s help, under the leadership of our beloved king. We will honor the pledge of our fathers and forefathers and will remain a sword of our dear Jordan in the honest Hashemite hands. May God protect Jordan. May God protect His Majesty King Abdallah II.”

The ad is signed by hundreds of Bani Hasan tribe members.
