Floyd Corkins II, the man who attempted to carry out a mass shooting last year at the Family Research Council, was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison.
Corkins, who had volunteered for the DC Center for the LGBT Community, entered the lobby of the Family Research Council August 15, 2012, with a handgun and fifteen Chick-fil-A sandwiches, which he intended to smear on victims’ faces as a political statement; the fast-food chain was in the headlines at the time for its president’s opposition to gay marriage.
Corkins’ attempt was foiled by a guard, Leonardo Johnson, who was shot as the two scuffled over the gun. Johnson was present at the sentencing at the U.S. District Court in Washington.
Prosecutors had requested that Corkins be sentenced to 45 years; Corkins’ attorney said his client was mentally ill and that an eleven-and-a-half year sentence was appropriate.
