Last semester, UC-Berkeley chancellor Robert Birgeneau blasted College Republicans for holding one of those mischievous affirmative-action bake sales, in which prices depend on the skin color of consumers. This semester, UC-Berkeley rolled out the welcome mat for Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Here’s the comment that Mark Yudof, president of the whole UC system, managed to muster, according to Judith Ayers of The College Fix:
“We cannot as a society allow what we regard as vile speech to lead us to abandon the cherished value of free speech,” he wrote in an open letter.
In exercising his free speech at Berkeley, Farrakhan apparently mocked Asian Americans:
at one point, he “briefly adopted a faux Asian accent and used gibberish after asking the audience if they had ever seen the Chinese picketing, drawing a gasp from some in the crowd.” …
The audience gave Farrakhan a standing ovation at the end.
