Federalism & Anti-Federalism

Steve Friess, a reporter at Politico apparently didn’t know what “federalism” means in today’s political discourse. He thought the federalist postion implied a strong central government. And in fairness it used to mean that at the time of the debate over the Constitution. Still, it seems to me someone covering politics today should know what federalism implies today. But I’m not interested in piling on. But it does raise an interesting question: When did federalism come to mean the opposite of what it used to mean?
