A Saudi Arabian woman has sparked outrage in her country after she became the first female anchor to appear on state television without a headscarf.
The unnamed anchor was reporting from London for the Al Ekhbariya channel, according to the Independent.
Codes of dress and behavior in Saudi Arabia are strictly enforced by the “mutawa” religious police. Women are, for the most part, required to wear veils or headscarves and not allowed to drive.
“She was not in a studio inside Saudi Arabia and we do not tolerate any transgression of our values and the country’s systems,” a spokesman for Saudi radio and television, Saleh Al Mughailif, told Al Tawasul News. He ensured enraged viewers that measures would be taken to prevent a repeat incident.
