Fetus Fuss

My instinct is to think that media criticism seems so trivial when dealing with matters of life and death, but when you consider that media is how we learn of these things, it’s no small thing. So: In the AP story on the Torres family why does the lede have to say “fetus”? Give me a break. The family saw it as a baby. People were gripped by the story because they got that there was a baby. People are contributing money because they’re heartstrings were pulled by a heartbreaking story about a family and an unborn baby, now mercifully born. Try to dehumanize it, but life will have the final say because people just get it when they see the images and the families and the heartache and joy and pain.
