The first results are always safe Labour seats. But there have now been some important gains for the Conservatives in the South, including Kingswood in Bristol, #145 on the Tories’ target list. This suggests that the exit poll may have underestimated Conservative support, although it is still by no means certain that David Cameron will gain a majority. In Torbay, for instance, the swing was from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats. One interesting seat to watch is the old safe Conservative seat of Oxford West and Abingdon, where the Liberal Democrat incumbent Dr Evan Harris is facing a strong Conservative challenge.
