Flatly Untrue?

I don’t want to defend the Michael J. Fox ad, Ramesh, but arguing as Fox does that embryonic stem-cell research “holds out hope” can’t be described as flatly untrue. And by definition, if Talent does not favor the use of federal funds for embryonic research — which I gather he doesn’t — then he is standing in the way of the expansion of that research since federal funding would expand that research. I don’t see what the problem with this argument is, since I would imagine that people who oppose embryonic stem-cell research on moral or natural-law grounds oppose its expansion and not just federal funding, after all.
