Tom Foley, the Republican candidate for governor of Connecticut, tells National Review Online that his staff is still resolving discrepancies between their tabulations and Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s “unofficial” results.
“We’re working with the secretary of the state’s office and cities and towns where discrepancies were reported,” Foley says. “The way we calculated it shows us winning but within the margin that would require a recount. We’re asking her not to post official results until they are certain results because the numbers keep changing around. In last twelve hours, the Bridgeport number has swung over 900 votes.”
Bysiewicz has planned a press conference this afternoon to announce the official results but she has yet to announce its exact time. “This will not begin before 3:00 p.m. I will notify you ASAP when I know the time of this press conference,” her spokesman, Av Harris, wrote today in an e-mail to the press.
Foley says his staff is finding problems in towns besides Bridgeport, where polling stations ran out of ballots on Election Day. “Today, the town of Torrington changed over 2,000 votes in my favor,” he notes.
Democrat Dan Malloy, however, remains confident he’ll win. “Since early Wednesday morning we have said we’re 100 percent confident that when the final vote is certified, Dan Malloy will be declared the winner by a margin comfortably outside what is necessary to trigger a recount. Nothing that’s happened since has changed that,” Dan Kelly, Malloy’s campaign manager, wrote in an e-mail to the press.
Asked if he’ll pursue legal action should the final margin be outside the cutoff for a recount, Foley responds, “We haven’t gotten there yet.”
