Football Follies

The L.A. Times and others have reported that President Obama is planning to attend the Super Bowl if his Chicago Bears make the big game. I wrote an article in Real Clear Sports after Obama’s infamous Michael Vick call arguing that presidents in general, and Obama in particular, have had trouble with football, and should avoid mixing politics and pigskins.

Subsequent to my piece, the Washington Post reported that Obama tried to garner the support of Michigan Republican Fred Upton for the stimulus package by inviting Upton and his teenage son to the 2009 White House Super Bowl party. According to the Post, Upton, now the incoming House Energy and Commerce chairman, was not swayed by the invitation and voted against the stimulus. Even if Obama’s Bears win, perhaps he should learn from both his own and presidential history, and consider staying away.
