I wrote on the theme of the Forgotten Man today. Two other points on the economy: 1) Many of Obama’s apologists say that his political problems overwhelmingly are the product of a weak economy. Certainly if the unemployment rate were 5%, the political landscape would be different. But Obama’s supporters rarely admit how much his election and the super-sized Democratic majorities in Congress were themselves the product of a weak economy, indeed of a historic financial panic that hit right before the election. Of course, their economic determinism didn’t prevent most of them from vastly over-interpreting Obama’s mandate; 2) Is there any reason to believe that, say, Obamacare would be much more popular in a good economy? Wouldn’t all the criticisms against it — it’s unaffordable, it will dump people out of their current insurance, etc. — be just as telling?
