Fort Lee Mayor: I Take Christie at His Word

After initially suggesting Chris Christie not visit Fort Lee at this point in the swirling controversy, Mayor Mark Sokolich met with the New Jersey governor on Thursday and accepted his apology for members of his administration closing lanes on the nearby George Washington Bridge. Sokolich told reporters that he was “glad” the governor ultimately decided to come to Fort Lee.

The mayor also said he believed Christie’s explanation that he was not involved with the decision for the closure. “I take him for his word, which is he had nothing to do with it,” Sokolich said.

Christie and Sokolich met for about 40 minutes in Fort Lee, which was affected by large traffic jams due to the lane closures in September. Both described the meeting as “productive.”
