Free Markets Kill

A reader alerts me (I didn’t even know you could read the Washington Post on paper):

I can’t find the picture online, but the front page of the Washington Post has a dramatic, tear-inducing photo. It’s kids in Niger, one of whom is lying prostrate, exhausted. He is naked and malnourished. His brother and another boy look on.

Anyway, what makes me mad (beyond those that allowed this condition in the first place) is the caption. Here’s the excerpt that enraged me: “The United Nations is attempting to provide food to 2.7 million people in the country, and humanitarian groups have arrived, but vendor profiteering, a government policy shift toward a free market and a decline in the traditional culture of generosity have combined to keep food out of people’s reach.”

Free markets are making people starve!?! Does the Post really believe that capitalism is killing these children?
