Freshman Republican from Oklahoma Says Something about Pastor Facing Execution in Iran for ‘Apostasy’ But the White House/State Department Won’t?

Oklahoma City, OK – Congressman James Lankford (R-OK) supported Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) call today for Iran to release Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani. Pastor Nadarkhani is facing execution by the Iranian government for refusing to recant his Christian faith. Prior to serving in the House of Representatives, Congressman Lankford worked for the Baptist General Convention and was the director of Falls Creek, the nation’s largest Christian youth camp. Throughout his long career in ministry, he has consistently advocated for greater religious freedom for those who face persecution such as Pastor Nadarkhani.

“Faith cannot be detained or controlled by a dictatorial regime,” said Congressman Lankford. “Iran’s detainment of Pastor Nadarkhani clearly shows that they devalue basic human liberty and faith in pursuit of unrelenting control of their country. This is a regime that falsely believes that they determine the rights they will permit for their own people. It is a discriminatory belief that has led to the religious persecution of many Iranian citizens who are endowed with the unalienable right that all men and women around the world have to pursue a more fulfilling and joyous life through religious freedom.”

“I join Speaker Boehner’s call and urge the State Department to weigh in on this matter in calling for the release of Pastor Nadarkhani. I invite all those who believe that no government should stand in the way of religious freedom of their people to join us.”
