Friday Potpourri I: World Affairs Journal

World Affairs Journal is rapidly becoming one of my favorite magazines. It’s got some stuff I usually disagree with pretty strongly in there, but it almost always has more than a couple really interesting pieces as well. And it’s just very well-written and/or edited. In the latest issue there’s a piece by Scott McConnell (hardly someone I always see eye to eye with), in which he analyzes American ethnicity and foreign policy. It’s really a fascinating read. Basically, he makes the case that the paleo-non-interventionist types have their greatest allies in the Hispanics, Asians, and other ethnic groups they wish to restrict from the immigration rolls. These groups didn’t much care for the war or for what McConnell describes as neocon foreign policy generally. Meanwhile, the so-called neocons themselves are pro-immigration, but have their greatest allies in foreign policy among the Evangelical, southern, whites who tend to want to restrict immigration. I’d quote the relevant bits, but even though I get a free print version (thank you very much) I can’t get beyond the teaser in front of the firewall.
