A Chris Christie appointee’s comment about the George Washington Bridge’s lane closings affecting school buses with children of supporters of their Democratic opponent reminds New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman of the deadly conflict between Muslims in the Middle East.

“The first thing that came to my mind is that’s exactly how Sunnis would talk about Shiites or Shiites would talk about Sunnis in Baghdad or Beirut,” he said on Morning Joe. He noted that the Lebanese civil war started as a result of a school bus being shot up.

On Wednesday, text messages revealed that a Christie Port Authority appointee told a peer not to feel bad about the traffic problems caused by the closures because “they are the children of Buono voters,” the Democratic challenger.

Friedman characterized that exchange as “how deep the polarization has become” that those involved saw their opponents as “enemies.”
