‘fringy apocalypticism infiltrating the rhetoric’

It’s the anniversary of Archbishop Timothy Dolan’s installation at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, which the New York Times notes here. The piece includes the above remark from R. Scott Appleby, a left-leaning academic described as “a history professor at the University of Notre Dame who describes himself as a fan of the archbishop’s.” We are directed to this blog post, which echoes the archbishop’s Palm Sunday remarks from the pulpit, but with much more detail. It’s a mystery to me where anything that can be interpreted as “fringy apocalypticism” can be found in either. It’s simply not there. The New York Times sought to dismiss its critic, and a Catholic helped the mission be accomplished. Not for the first time!
