A Fundamental Truth about the Tea Party

Last week, I was talking to a veteran reporter, a veteran observer and analyst of American politics. Not a Republican, not a conservative. I bet he voted for Obama. He’s just an honest, experienced reporter. And he said something striking about the Tea Party. I paraphrase: “The thing is, it’s a genuine grassroots movement. You hardly ever see anything that is truly grassroots. Nixon used to organize stuff, and call it ‘grassroots.’ But this is the real thing: something new under the sun: a bona fide grassroots movement. It’s astonishing.”

I was impressed, considering the source.
