are both saying, as many people have, that McCain should have opposed the bailout. Maybe he would have been better off politically taking that position. But saying that he should have opposed it assumes either that it was not urgently necessary–which would have been reason enough to oppose it–or that his gaining an electoral advantage is more important than rescuing the economy, which is false. I don’t know that either one of them would disagree with me here; just want to make the point.
