‘Get Out Now, Pat!’

William Parker, founder of the Pennsylvania Club for Growth calls on Pat Toomey to get out of the Senate race and sings the praises of Sen. Arlen Specter (R, Pa.).

Today I am urging Pat to withdraw from the 2010 Senate race because his candidacy threatens to hand over total control of the federal government to the Democrats.

Parker argues that no one to the right of Specter can win in Pennsylvania.

Pat can’t win the general election – here’s why. His lifetime American Conservative Union record of 97 puts him farther to the right than Rick Santorum’s 88 percent lifetime rating.  Rick was a two-term Senator, ranked number three in the Republican leadership, spent $31 million and lost by 18 points.

Even if I do not agree with the idea that Toomey is too conservative to win, it is a common argument. But this presentation of that argument is kind of odd. Did Santorum really lose because of his high ACU rating? And if Santorum lost by 18 points with an 88 percent rating, does it follow mathematically that, all other things being equal, Toomey will lose by 19.8 points because of his 97 percent rating?
