Gibbs: Senate ‘Will Ratify’ New START

Washington — Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, told reporters this afternoon that President Obama is confident that the Senate will ratify the New START treaty this week.

“The White House believes that before Congress leaves town, the Senate will ratify the New START treaty,” Gibbs said.

Nevertheless, Obama, Vice President Biden, and other administration officials are still working the phones. “Obviously, the president and vice president continue to communicate with senators,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said that the president and veep are reaching out to on-the-fence Senate Republicans who may not be swayed by the opposition of Sen. Mitch McConnell (Ky.), the GOP leader, and Sen. Jon Kyl (Ariz.), the GOP whip. “I have not talked to anybody here who had them as yes votes at any point in this process. Their statements, in my mind, don’t impact that.”
