Although Newt Gingrich has not called outright for Rick Santorum to drop out, he pushed the idea again this morning, reports Politico:
“We’re down basically to the fewer conservative [candidates] there are, the better we’re doing,” Gingrich said on ABC News’s “This Week,” referring to gains he’s made since Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain dropped out of the race.
He could permanently take the lead if Rick Santorum — the candidate pulling some conservative support away from Gingrich — were to also drop out. “The fact is, when you combine the Santorum vote and the Gingrich vote … the conservative combined would clearly beat Romney,” the former House speaker said.
