Girl Who Shaved Head in Support of Cancer-Stricken Friend Barred from School for Dress-Code Violation

A young girl in Colorado who shaved her head in solidarity with her cancer-stricken friend was barred from school on Monday for violating the school’s dress code.

9NEWS of Colorado reports that when Kamryn Renfro decided to shave her head to support her friend, 11-year-old Delaney Clements, who has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, Caprock Academy of Grand Junction turned her away saying that the shaved head was a violation of the school’s dress code.

President of the Caprock Academy board of directors Catherine Norton Breman said in a statement that the school’s dress code is clear and was “created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted.”

However, Delaney Clements’ mother, Wendy Campbell, was surprised by the school’s rules and said, “I didn’t realize that hair was such an important aspect of a child at school.” Delaney was happy that her friend shaved her head, saying, “it made me feel very special and that I’m not alone,” but told reporters that her friend Kamryn is very sad now because “she was really happy to go back to school and show people what she did, but now she didn’t get to.”

Caprock Academy allowed Kamryn back to school on Tuesday but stood by their decision concerning the dress-code policy. The school’s board of directors is scheduled to meet Tuesday meeting to discuss the case and see if an exception can be made.
