Gitmo Gets Its Groove Back

President Obama’s inability to follow-through on his promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay has, remarkably, put him in line with the American public.

According to a new CNN/Opinion Research poll, support for closing Gitmo has dropped 12 points since Obama took office, and now sits at 39 percent.

The poll shows that independent voters are largely responsible for the shift — part of a broad trend in which support for Obama on key issues has slipped among independents.

“Just Democrats still think that Guantanamo should be closed, but Independents have completely changed – from an even split in January 2009 to three-quarters who want to keep the facility open today,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
