Giuliani Backs Immigration Bill Despite Belief Triggers Will Not Work

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani today expressed support for the Gang of Eight’s immigration-reform bill despite major reservations with the legislation because he supports “getting it over with and getting it done.”

In an interview with radio talk show host Laura Ingraham, Giuliani said he does not believe the border-security triggers in the bill will be effective. “No, no, no, the only thing that works is putting the right number of resources on the border and being able to stop people physically from coming in for a period of two or three years to change behavior,” he told her.

The status quo, however, diverts an enormous amount of resources to people who are doing “no harm to anyone,” Giuliani argued, and the current legislation, despite its flaws, is the best we can hope for in difficult circumstances.
