GLAAD to Honor Bill Clinton Despite His Overseeing DOMA, DADT

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will honor Bill Clinton later this month. Politico reports that the organization will present the former president with the Advocate for Change award at its media-award event in Los Angeles. “Leaders and allies like President Clinton are critical to moving our march for equality forward,” GLAAD said in a statement.

Clinton served as president during the implementation of two policies that were controversial within the gay community: the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in the military in 1993, and the Defense of Marriage of Act (DOMA), which he signed into law in 1996. Last month, he wrote an op-ed calling DOMA unconstitutional and urging the Supreme Court to strike down the law.
