God I Thank Thee That I Am Not as This Publican

James J. Kilpatrick was not just a “good writer” as Mike Potemra said. He was an extraordinary writer. His campaign pieces for National Review in the 1968 and 1972 cycles were detailed but vivid, ironic but respectful. They impelled me to write about the great game myself.

His description of John McCormack giving his farewell address to the Democratic convention in Miami in the year of McGovern should be a model to us all.

Historian Richard Brookhiser is a senior editor of National Review and a senior fellow at the National Review Institute.
