‘Our Shaming Culture and the Possibility of Being Fired’

I wrote my column on the so-called anti-diversity screed yesterday before news of the firing, but ended saying that the author would probably pay the price. That didn’t require much prescience. In fact, the author himself hinted at it. He wrote in a note about the reaction to the memo, “Despite what the public response seems to have been, I’ve gotten many personal messages from fellow Googlers expressing their gratitude for bringing up these very important issues which they agree with but would never have the courage to say or defend because of our shaming culture and the possibility of being fired. This needs to change.” It, sadly, is not going to change any time soon, and his saga is all the more confirmation of that.
