Senator Deb Fischer (R., Neb.) railed against Majority Leader Harry Reid’s “shameful” approach of using the Senate’s amendment procecss to prevent “meaningful debate” within the chamber. She turned the tables on Democrats’ accusations of Republican obstructionism by instead blaming Reid’s handling for the “broken” process.

“It’s a radical form of control, and I am tired of it,” the freshman senator said on the floor. “Rather than allowing an open-amendment process, the majority leader has locked this place down.”

Fischer isn’t alone: Other Republicans have criticized Reid’s handling of the amendment process. Last year, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said the Senate had become “a U.S. House of Representatives with the Rules Committee of Harry Reid alone.”
