Gosnell Gets 30 Years for Illegal Prescribing

Abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell — already serving three consecutive life terms for killing three babies born alive after botched late-term abortion attempts — has been sentenced to another 30 years for the illegal distribution of prescription drugs. U.S district judge Cynthia Rufe imposed the sentence on Monday after Gosnell pleaded guilty to running what he called a “pain-management clinic.”

Gosnell admitted to writing as many as 2,300 prescriptions in a single month, and at one point 200 in a single night, for addictive pain medications and anti-anxiety drugs such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Xanax. He defended his drug racket saying that he was merely offering his “expertise” in “narcotic rehabilitation.” In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered Gosnell to pay a $50,000 fine and forfeit $200,000 he had obtained through the prescription-drug operation.

The night 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar died from a failed abortion attempt in Gosnell’s office in 2009 Gosnell wrote 18 prescriptions.

Gosnell, now 72 years old, will serve the 30 years concurrently with his three life sentences and will have no option for parole.
