‘Governor’ Nixon

So in today’s G-File I goofed. I somehow wrote that Nixon had been governor of California rather than he ran for governor and lost (to Moonbeam’s Dad). It was a dumb mistake, but one born of lazy typing not ignorance. The most heartening thing about the mistake is that I’m hearing from scads of people about it (dispelling the fear I sometimes have that nobody is in fact reading my “news”letter). But I want to be clear that I did, in fact, know Nixon was never governor of California. Indeed, I reference his “wilderness” years in the same paragraph. If he’d been governor of California, there’d have been no such years. Also, my dad — who once ran the now-defunct North American Newspaper Alliance —  played a small role in Nixon’s comeback from that wilderness by working with Bill Safire to get Nixon to write a series of articles, starting in 1966, that served as Nixon’s reintroduction to the public. Anyway, it was a stupid mistake.
