Last year’s film Pope John Paul II is finally out on DVD from Ignatius Press. Cary Elwes’s performance as the young Karol Wojtyla captures the character’s strength, sensitivity, and intelligence; Jon Voight’s performance as the older Wojtyla is uncanny in its resemblance to the actual speech and manner of the late Pope. A visually lavish production, the film successfully communicates religious ideas, stopping pleasantly short of didacticism.
