A parliamentarian from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party [AKP] called this weekend for a “Green [Islamic] Revolution” in Turkey. Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul is today in Washington. Hopefully diplomatic niceties won’t prevent Condoleezza Rice from asking about such statements. Because Turkey is choosing president and parliament the same year (for the first time since 1973), stakes are high. It’s long, but Turkey-watchers and Turkey junkies might be interested in this just-published essay about the AKP’s record, its agenda, and the chance for instability as Turkey faces the prospect of its first Islamist president.
