It seems to me that Trump is thinking about Greenland all wrong. All we need is for 60,000 Americans to move there. It’s a big country, and there is a lot of space for newcomers. Any objections to their arrival would be presumptively xenophobic.
Preferably, those Americans would emigrate legally. But, if not — if, that is, the Danes have an unreasonable immigration policy — they could justify their undocumented status on the grounds that they were merely helping to reclaim stolen land. Once there, the Americans could immediately demand a pathway to citizenship. After all, no human being is illegal, and deporting peaceful people is not who we are.
Within a few years, those Americans could vote for Greenland to join the U.S. Obviously, such a plebiscite would have to be universally respected, because it would represent Our Democracy.
Some might say that this plan would constitute some sort of Great Replacement. But we wouldn’t need to worry about that, as it’s a right-wing myth.
