On The Five last night, Greg Gutfeld advanced a simple answer to the border crisis: Pack migrants on a bus when they show up on the border and return them home. I like Greg and, of course, in theory, this is basically what we should be doing. The problem is that the Trump administration is prevented by the rules from doing it.
Even friends of the administration don’t seem to fully realize that the only option for keeping families together at the moment is releasing the adults and children into the country together — because the children are making it in regardless. (The shelters aren’t long-term detention facilities — they are way-stations until the children are released, usually into the care of a parent or relative.)
So, it’s not true that the rules have to change to stop the Trump administration from separating families; they do have to change if we want to return families home together.
