truly believed that “bigotry and prejudice” are the worst things human
beings are capable of, would have had to have had an extremely limited
acquaintance with human nature.
However, it was Johnson who said: “In lapidary inscriptions a man is not
upon oath,” and I think the same principle can be applied to funeral
tributes. GWB’s remark was just the cant of our age, and I don’t think
should be taken seriously.
