H. W. Acts as Witness for Same-Sex Marriage

Former president George H. W. Bush served as a witness for the wedding of lesbian couple Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen this weekend in  Maine, according to the Washington Post. Thorgalsen posted a photo on Facebook of the 41st president signing the documents with the caption “Getting our marriage license witnessed!”

The former president’s office made no statement on the matter, though his representative Jim McGrath confirmed that he and his wife Barbara were at the wedding: “They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.”

Bush has not formally expressed support for same-sex marriage.
