Hagel on Cuba

After a hearing, senators have a chance to question a nominee in what are called QFRs — Questions for the Record. These are written Q&As.

So, Senator Cruz asked Chuck Hagel about Cuba. Hagel has praised Jimmy Carter’s recommended approach to Cuba. To call it soft would be a little generous. In his answer to Cruz, Hagel was vague and dodgy. I noted something interesting, however. Hagel said, “I share the President’s view that the Cuban government must change its outdated political model to reflect the commitments undertaken by other governments in the Hemisphere to promote and defend representative democracy.”

Very nice, I guess. But “outdated political model”? When is totalitarian dictatorship in date, or up to date, or in style? Is it like chiffon?

Cripe. Nice going, American people: Your decision on November 6 was . . . just super.
