Last week, I briefly described the plight of the Michigan Review, the right-of-center student newspaper at the University of Michigan. It’s on the verge of losing the campus office it has called home for 27 years over what amounts to a paperwork error. This would deliver a tremendous blow to intellectual diversity in Ann Arbor — a situation that the Michigan Daily seems to find amusing. (The Michigan Review is to the Michigan Daily what National Review is to the New York Times, sort of.)
The Daily has just given out its left-wing Edgar Awards, including this one to itself:
The Rupert Murdoch Edgar for having a monopoly on journalism goes to… The Michigan Daily! Today the Ann Arbor News, tomorrow the world — or at least the Michigan Review. We hear they don’t even have an office anymore.
(The Ann Arbor News, founded in 1835, will cease publication in July.)
The fight for the Review’s office isn’t over yet, but it looks like it will take somebody in the university administration to cut through the school’s own bureaucracy and solve a problem that never should have arisen in the first place.
