Harkin Compares Mandated Maternity Care for Men to Property Taxes for Parents with No Kids

Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee chairman Tom Harkin told men or couples not planning to have children not to oppose Obamacare provisions requiring Americans to buy health-care policies with maternity care so that others could have it if they wanted it included in their plans. The Iowa Democrat compared those that oppose the provision and higher premiums to parents refusing to pay property taxes because they do not have children enrolled in public schools.

“Maybe I shouldn’t have to pay property taxes to pay for my local schools. My kids aren’t there anymore, why should I worry about it?” he hypothetically suggested before urging opponents to look beyond their preferred policies in order to benefit others.

“No, we’re better than that in this country,” he explained. “Same way with health-care — it is a value system.”
