Have You Seen It?

All my life, I have heard people criticize “unbridled capitalism.” They don’t criticize capitalism per se. (Well, some of them do.) They criticize “unbridled capitalism.” I have no idea where this capitalism has ever been practiced. You? Hong Kong in its heyday? Singapore on its best day?

Anyway, a Reuters report begins, “Pope Francis, whose criticisms of unbridled capitalism have prompted some to label him a Marxist, said in an interview published on Sunday that communists had stolen the flag of Christianity.” Etc., etc.

It reminds me of Rand Paul, who pretends that his conservative critics favor a military solution to every problem (while claiming that he himself is a Reagan man, which is especially galling). On the plus side, it could be that the libertarian senator favors “unbridled capitalism.”

Anyway, a pox on strawmen. Also, capitalism around the world could use less bridling, not more.
