The Corner

Have You Written Yours Yet?

For those who wish a break from the political wars, or the war wars, I offer a post: here. It’s about Yefim Bronfman, the (great) Russian-born pianist, who has begun a traversal of the Prokofiev sonatas at Carnegie Hall.

Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 1 happens to be his Op. 1 — he wrote it when he was about 18. And, in this post, I mention the Mills Brothers song “Opus One” — written in the 1940s by Sy Oliver and Sid Garris, and, of course, popularized by the Millses.

The lyrics go, “Oh, baby, I’m a-rackin’ my brain, to think of a name, to give to this tune, so Perry can croon. And maybe ol’ Bing will give it a fling, and that’ll start everyone hummin’ the thing.”

At another point, the lyrics go, “It’s got to swing, not sway, baby” — and I love the way the Millses make “baby” rhyme with “sway,” sort of.

Anyway, here they are. Thought you might enjoy the song as a break, as I did, a few minutes ago.
