Criticism of my article on how health-care legislation could still fail in the House has centered on my assumption that “Pelosi did not have many potential yes votes in reserve.” My main reason for believing that she didn’t is that she accepted the Stupak amendment. She wouldn’t have done that unless she had to. The House majority whip, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D., S.C.), said she needed to fold on that issue to gain ten votes.
