As Carrie pointed out earlier today, Gloria Steinem told Bill Maher that women support Bernie Sanders because they’re boy-crazy: “When you’re young, you’re thinking, ‘Where are the boys?’ The boys are with Bernie.” She has since sort of apologized, but to the extent that there’s any truth to Steinem’s heteronormative speculation, it shows how much the tables have turned since the 1960s, when it was girls radicalizing boys into resisting the draft (that’s Joan Baez and her sisters in the photo):
Fifty years ago, women held all the cards, but now they have to vote for a doddering old socialist and act like they don’t think he’s crazy, just to get boys to look at them. Did a guy invent feminism? Maybe oppression is power after all.
