New York City mayor Bill de Blasio declined to endorse Hillary Clinton during his appearance on Sunday’s Meet the Press. Says de Blasio: “We need to see the substance.”
If you need an indication that Democrats are unenthused by the former First Lady’s coming campaign, look no further. De Blasio was Clinton’s campaign manager during her successful 2000 Senate campaign. Yet he questions whether she will have “substance” to offer? Ouch.
De Blasio is, furthermore, not the first to hedge when asked whether he will support Clinton, and it makes for an interesting point: Hillary Clinton is, in de Blasio’s words, a “tremendous public servant” and “one of the most qualified people ever to run for this office.” And unless Elizabeth Warren or Joe Biden jumps in the race, she is sure to cinch up the nomination easily. So what de Blasio is saying is that Hillary Clinton is “the best” candidate, and probably the inevitable candidate — but he still is not ready to offer his support.
If prominent Democrats wanted to coronate Hillary Clinton, they could do it today. But they do not want that. Why not? Maybe because they know there is not much “substance” in the pantsuit.
