A Few More Thoughts on Hillary’s Pneumonia

Perhaps a better candidate would be able somehow to turn this incident to his advantage, by, say, using it to demonstrate resilience, or playing on people’s natural sympathy–we all get sick. But it’s hard to see how the failure to disclose her diagnosis won’t exacerbate her trustworthiness problem at least at the margins and it’s possible the condition–if she doesn’t bounce back quickly (she’s now canceled her West Coast trip)–could erode the sense that she’s up for the job. There has been some debate on Twitter whether she had an obligation to disclose her diagnosis. The criterion here seems simple, though: If the condition is serious enough to interfere with her ability to campaign, it is serious enough to disclose. If there were any doubt before, the episode shows a Clinton White House would be habitually secretive and deceptive.
